The recipe below unites some of our favorite parts of Thanksgiving – creamy mashed potatoes and crispy fried onions – with savory sausage. The result is a hearty dish perfect for a weeknight dinner.
This recipe calls for turkey sausage, which will add all the rich flavor of pork without the added fat, but you can use any sausage you like.
INGRIDIENTS :
1 19.5-ounce package sweet turkey sausage, casing removed
2 shallots, minced
1 24-ounce package refrigerated mashed potatoes
3/4 cup milk
1 teaspoon dried poultry seasoning
1 8-ounce package shredded cheddar cheese
1 cup French fried onions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Brown the sausage in a frying pan over medium-high heat, stirring often. Cook about 7 minutes, until browned and crumbly. Add the shallots and sauté together 2 minutes, then drain off any excess fat and set aside.
Stir together the mashed potatoes, milk, and poultry seasoning until smooth. Add the sausage and mix until well combined.
Spread the potato mixture in a baking dish, and top with the melted cheese. Bake for about 20-30 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly and the casserole is warmed through. Top with the fried onions and bake 5 more minutes, then serve.
